The Savegre River is pumping again for an awsome, big-wave roller coaster ride through rainforest. There are great waterfalls to explore along the way as well. High water on the Rio Naranjo has forced us to abandon the Chorro section until next year. We normally start running trips up there in December. But the lower Naranjo is fun again, and makes for a quicker, more inexpensive option closer to town.

And the red tide is gone, and the ocean is as clear as ever for snorkeling on our sea kayaking tour.

Eco-tourists and wildlife enthusiasts delight in Costa Rica’s amazing dolphin and whale watching tours. The country’s warm seas are home to one of the most biologically diverse marine habitats in the world.
Pockets of shallow, temperate waters create the ideal ecosystem for several species of whales (the humpback being the most common), as well as bottlenose, spinner and spotted dolphins.
The Osa Peninsula’s Drake Bay has the longest humpback whale watching season in the world.
South American humpback populations migrate north during Antarctica’s winter season journey ends in Costa Rica, where they spend the months of August through October breeding and calving in the warm waters.
North American populations, making an equally lengthy journey south from the Arctic, winter here from December through April. Together, these humpback whale populations spend eight months in Costa Rica each year.
A humpback whale song generally lasts from 10 to 20 minutes and is sung continuously for hours at a time. Humpback whales are divided into North American and South American populations – all males of each population sing the same song, despite great distances between groups.
However, the songs of North American and South American populations are very different from the other. The songs change slightly from year to year. Males float head down and relatively motionless while singing; they have the ability to sing in many octaves, some with frequencies unable to be heard by humans.
